Linux Desk Reference (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (20 August, 2001)
Author: Scott Hawkins
Average review score:

Looking forward to the next edition
I like the book, the layout, the typeface, the structure, the organisation, the extensive index and especially the command lists inside the front and back covers.

So why only four stars?

The book actually contains a lot of mistakes and although generally very good there are areas where there are obvious errors which have not been corrected.

In some sections the logical flow of the material is broken and we seem to fall from one command into the middle of another. As bedtime reading this made it very hard work. As a reference manual it has already helped me sort out some problems.

Whoa!
Just got this book today, and already has come in useful in solving two problems I had with command line switches. It's pretty good so far.

Excellent Help for Linux Commands
I bought this book because I had recently (finally!!) managed to install Linux on my laptop. I was a complete Linux newbie and kept running into hints and mentions here and there about this or that Linux command but never any explanation of how to use them! The book is an excellent systematic, brief presentation of these commands. You DON'T have to be a programmer to benefit from this book!! Now, many months later, I can say that I still frequently consult the book. It opens up the great versatility of Linux for those of us who are not programmers but want more from their Linux computing experience. If you're a newbie, buy the book!

Pain Erasure: The Bonnie Prudden Way
Published in Paperback by M Evans & Co (May, 2002)
Authors: Bonnie Prudden, Desmond Tivy, Terence Coyle, and Stephen Hawkins
Average review score:

This book was the key to my recovery
After experimenting with far less-thorough forms of treatment (chiropractic, standard western (incompetent) medicine) for a mysterious condition that made my feet get floppy and some of the toes cramp excruciatingly, I remembered I had bought this book a few years ago. I pulled it out, read it, zeroed in on the problem and have virtually eliminated it from my life within a week of starting the therapy this book guides the reader through. (The problem had existed for about 5 weeks; longer-lived problems that are helped by this work can take longer to fully relieve.) For this little money there's no reason not to try it. Just make sure to follow the directions, and don't forget to do the stretching and conditioning exercises that are recommended -- they are integral to the effectiveness of the treatment. This is something you can do at home (even by yourself -- got a tennis ball?), whenever you need to. If you're in pain, don't pass it up. It is safe and drug-free.

Awesome book but a little dated
I had problems with computer usage. I tried wraps and cold packs and all...I heard of this myotherapy method from Stuart McRoberts "Brawn" (another book I recommend for weight lifters) who had back problems till he used this method. This book helped relieve the pain the natural way. The book is a little old but it works. She needs to update the pictures to make it clearer.

This is a no-nonsense practical approach to pain relief.
When you're in pain, nothing seems too extreme in the pursuit of relief. Bonnie Prudden's writing easily demystifies the subject and gives a comprehensive way to reduce and in many cases erase pain totally. It works! It really works! The book is written in a personal and conversational style--clever, witty and wise. It is easy to understand and easy to implement. The exercises which are required in the therapy are unique in that they employ only full range of motion movements: some are not as glamourous as those of the spandex-clad exercise classes, but the biomechanical accuracy of Bonnie's stretches and strengthening regiments are based on decades of research and success. I thank god for having discovered all of Bonnie's writings and hope everyone receives as much benefit as my students and I have in our quest for a quality and pain-free life.

Leadership As a Lifestyle: The Path to Personal Integrity and Positive Influence
Published in Hardcover by Executive Excellence (October, 2001)
Author: John L. Hawkins
Average review score:

A Deeper Perspective on Leadership
Mr. Hawkins takes a page from his own book and helps the reader to see reality as it is. That reality being that no leader leads out in a vacuum or a neatly compartmentalized world, but exercises his influence amidst a community of relationships. With this reality in mind, Mr. Hawkins gives many practical helps and insightful gems to help the reader build and maximize his leadership in all areas of life, not just in the business realm. There are concepts here that I have not come across in any other leadership book. Because of its unique insights, richness and practicality, I will be keeping this book close by for future reference.

Excellent Read
Hawkins provides an excellent framework from which to carefully think about leadership as a lifestyle. He effectively argues against compartmentalizing the different areas of influence (e.g., family, work) in our lives, but instead, encourages the reader to balance the conflicts that are sure to arise. He also provides useful insights into managing our lives in each area of influence so that we prove ourselves faithful in each.

The book is written in a concise and very readable manner. I highly recommend it, and have even purchased additional copies to give to friends and family!!!

Great book to "put all the pieces together"
The book Leadership as a Lifestyle, by John Hawkins, is a great book that talks about how leadership must be looked at as a lifestyle more than just a method of thinking. Hawkins emphasizes that the only way to become a leader is to talk, act, and use the principles of leadership in everything in your life. He breaks the book up into three major parts: (1) Leadership at Work, (2) Leadership at Home, and (3) Leadership with Friends. Each part is then broken into subparts to show how leadership principles should be applied to that specific part of your life.

Hawkins draws upon many of the different leadership skills that the O'Hair book lists. Hawkins agrees that managers are completely different than leaders. He poses the question, "Should managers be leaders?" and then follows up with "Are all managers leaders?" As we saw in the O'Hair textbook, the answers are yes and no, respectively. Hawkins then continues to discuss the different systems of management theory and how those theories can relate to leadership. He poses many questions for each of the different styles of managerial theory that O'Hair lists. Specifically, he asks how one can lead in any of the first three managerial systems from Likert's Systems of Management. He questions whether one can lead if one has no followers. Hawkins shows that to have followers, one must gain long-term loyalty and commitment. He further proves that only life-empowered leadership (essentially Likert's System 4) can accurately do such a thing.

Unlike other self-help books, Hawkins offers many questions to ask yourself as a manager, father/mother, friend, or human to test your leadership skills. For example, he states that three questions, in particular, are daily questions to ask yourself: (1) What specific people am I leading, (2) What exactly am I leading them to do or to become, and (3) Are they doing it or becoming it? If you don't know the answers to these questions, Hawkins states that you are not a leader, as you are not leading anybody. And, to quote Hawkins, "a leader with no followers is nobody."

Already I have asked myself many of the questions that Hawkins has posed. I realize that in many of my endeavors where I consider myself a leader, I am not. I may be in a position of power, but I have no followers. I need to change my lifestyle to fit that of one of life-empowered leadership. I need to be loyal and offer a commitment to all my employees. I need them to know that I am here to help, and if they are willing to follow, I can lead them. This will help me tremendously as I further my career and gain more knowledge and wisdom. Already I am re-reading Hawkins book for more in-depth information. I would definitely rate this book as a solid five star book. It has already helped me tremendously and will continue to do so for quite some time.

I: Reality and Subjectivity
Published in Hardcover by Veritas Publishing (March, 2003)
Author: David R. Hawkins
Average review score:

Stunning
Simply one of *the most important and profound* spiritual books I have ever read. I was impressed by "Power vs Force" and amazed by "The Eye of the I" but "I: Reality and Subjectivity," the third in the series, was beyond all my expectations. If you are ready, a great teacher is here. This is THE REAL DEAL!" Bravo Dr. Hawkins.

Hawkins books are there for you when you are ready
Otherwise they will make no sense, or else be grossly misinterpreted. He himself states time and time again that nothing at one level of consciousness is true at another. How can one even *attempt* to explain the unexplainable and succeed on any level unless the consciouness that is reading is quite fertile and ready? The Truth that Hawkins teaches is so incredibly radical and direct that the 'person' submits and the ego dissolves, or else that person goes into paradigm shock and denies it, or just dismisses it as strange dogmatic baloney.

I truly believe that books on this level of Power find the right people through synchronicity when they are ready to receive it. If you are not at the stage of spiritual evolution to surrender *all*, and I mean *all* beliefs and positionalities than Hawkins works are likely to anger and confuse you. This is obviously evidenced by certain reviews of his works.
He himself warns of this in his prefaces, that his works are only meant for the extremely dedicated spirtual seeker willing to surrender all thoughts, desires, and positionalities to God.

Open Your Eyes
To the person who describes Dr. Hawkins as a "neocon" I would offer this advice: if you are so offended by some of Dr. Hawkin's "positionalities", maybe you should examine why. Possibly your problem lies within.

501 Cross Stitch Designs
Published in Paperback by Meredith Books (March, 1995)
Author: Sam Hawkins
Average review score:

Good designs but a disappointment
This book would be a great addition to my collection if I didn't have a collection. The designs themselves are great but these designs have been used in other books or are so similaar to other patterns in several other books that I regret buying. The carts are in black and white. They are small designs and easy to finish in a couple of hours. Quite a few of these small designs change colors over 10 times. If you have few cross stitch books, this one would be a great addition to your beginning collection. But if you have a large collection, examine this before buying.

Great Hamster Cross Stitch!
I loved the variety of the designs in all catagories, but loved the pet patterns the most. The three hamster designs were especially adorable and very appreciated since designs of life-like rodents (especially hamsters, guinea pigs, rats etc.) are impossible to find.:-) I hope that there will be ferret cross stitch patterns soon!

Best "Small Designs" Book
This book has been around for some time now and since I'm not partial to small designs because I prefer big projects,I never got around to buying this book, but since Amazon has introduced its new and wonderful "Look Inside" feature I got the chance to look through some of its pages and found that the designs though small are rich with color and detail. The designs are original they range from playful and fun to sophisticated and fancy. The charts are of good size,in black and white but very clear to follow. The photographs of all the end results are included. Some of the designs can be done in as little as 15 minutes, the most complicated in two hours.I'm glad I bought this book,I've already finished a simple project with one of its designs which only took me an hour and a half. With 501 designs I'm sure to find a couple of hundred more to work on.

The World War II Gi: Us Army Uniforms 1941-45 in Color Photographs
Published in Hardcover by Motorbooks International (May, 1900)
Authors: Richard Winrow, Tim Hawkins, and Richard Windrow
Average review score:

Great efforts but lack reality
I was not expecting this book to be a Sunday afternoon photo shoot for reanactors. It lacks reality and substance.I returned this book out of disapointment.Seeing the same faces in every picture but in diffrent uniforms takes a lot away from this book. However, the color photos were nice. Better luck next time but a A for effort.

Tremendously Great Book
A MUST have for anyone interesting in WWII - from the casual history buff to the serious reenactor. The colour photographs breathe new life into the lives the men led, and give a much clearer picture of what they had to put up with (a LOT of those items were heavy and/or bulky), as well as the uses of their equipment. If you've ever had a question about 'how did they ever do _____?', then this is the book for you. From mud-spattered uniforms to the ubiquitous Lucky Strikes, this book will give you a view into the past... and in colour :)

SUPERB RESEARCH MATERIAL!!!
Here is one superb research material for all collectors and modellers who are interested in American WW2 uniforms and equipment. Photographs are superb, clear, and sharp! Sure, the models are re-enactors, but they were posed and modeled realistically.

As an American WW2 militaria collector in the Philippines, where information does not abound as much as in the United States and other countries, I would say that this book lessened the burden of research and saved me a lot of time and effort.

I would highly recommend this reference material to all!

Inside Tcp/Ip: A Comprehensive Introduction to Protocols and Concepts (Inside...)
Published in Paperback by New Riders (November, 1997)
Authors: Karanjit Siyan, Nancy Hawkins, and Joern Wettern
Average review score:

No more than introduction
Do not buy this book if you are familiar with TCP/IP foundations or consider yourself any smart. It contains a lot of trivial diagrams and what can be explained in just a sentence often occupies a dozen pages. This makes the book very boring to read and impossible to use as a reference. It also does not cover anything except foundations, although the table of content looks very impressive.

Very comprehensive!
This book covers all aspects of TCP/IP, and even a lot more about networking in general. Very good!

Wonderful Teacher
I took Karanjit's class at Learning Tree and I have to say no one has been able to teach me subnetting like that before. His book is almost straight out of his class with much more detail. I would strongly suggest taking his class, but if you are unable, and are looking to get a solid understanding of TCP/IP, read this book. His credentials are impeccable, and his teaching style is, in my opinion, one of the best. I have taken some MCSE classes, and some other Internet classes, and have yet to learn as much from someone as I did from him.

A Bicycle Journey to the Bottom of the Americas: Being a True Account of a Bike Adventure from Alaska
Published in Paperback by Writer's Showcase Press (October, 2000)
Author: George J. Hawkins
Average review score:

Adventure at it's best!
Adventure at its best-on the seat of a bicycle! I loved reading this book! I especially enjoyed reading the day to day challenges George was faced with on his trip.- The diary form in which the book is written made me feel like I was there experienceing everything- which made it difficult to put the book down. So, if you are looking to experience adventure but don't have the time right now to actually leave your house, read George Hawkin's book.

He's been there!
Having personally hiked the Pacific Crest Trail, bicycled across the U.S., and kayaked the Inside Passage of Alaska, I can say from experience that George Hawkins "Has been there: to that place in one's soul where adventure is not a matter of counting miles, staying on schedule, or planning outcomes." George's book allowed me to relive the delights of strenuous travel. I laughed, cried, felt the rain and mud, bites of bugs, sips of wiskey, and words of wisdom from this delightful narative. Mr. Hawkins' story flows as a stream meanders, as real life adventure is truly lived. If you want a taste of what you're missing, being stuck at the office in front of a computer all day, give this book a glance. If you're an experienced outdoor adventurer revive the joy and hardships once felt through George's wimsical humor. Or, if your're simply bored or lonely, vicariously enjoy passing the time Journeying to the Bottom of the Americas; you won't regret it.

A Bicycle Journey to the Bottom of the Americas
George not only made one of the epic bicycle tours around but wrote about it in a way that makes a great read. He spun his pedals from one interesting event to the next without dwelling on the hills, headwinds and rain; which are just some of the less interesting points of bicycle touring. He takes you with him on his adventure in a way that makes you want to get on your bike and go for a ride. I wish I could follow in his tracks.

Can we avoid the next Holocaust?
Published in Unknown Binding by H.O.Y. & Sons (01 June, 1996)
Author: Yisrayl Hawkins
Average review score:

Learn From The Past If You Don't Want It Repeated!
Steven Spielburg read this book! It is truly spellbinding and all factual. The prophets of the past have certainly given us a road map to determine our future. The photos in this book are grisly. The words of Scripture tells us how we may avoid the same horrors that occured over half a century ago. This is not just reading material for Jews, but for all people of all faiths. The old adage; "If we don't hang together we will all die together" is never so true as outlined in this book.

Some of the details of the book are very erudite and unless you check up and prove statements from the Scriptures it could make you believe that they are from an author that would seem like a modern Nostradamus. The newspaper clippings and photos make this a book of history that is worth reading and studying. The prophecies of the future is awesome. As a film maker, I would like to see it made into a movie. Maybe it will be in actuality and documented for the nightly news when the horrors of the final conflict begins!

Don't let this horror occur again!
The historical photos alone will make one cringe. The message is for today's "time of the end" and should be reading for those who search for how the imminent disaster for all the world can be averted. The research into the Scriptures is noteable but a bit overwhelming. Worth the money. The book should be made into a film.

A Biblical reason for the Holocaust
This has got to be one of the most significant books written on the subject of the Jewish Holocaust? It explores the reasons for the wicked persecutions against the Jewish people and gives an answer that I believe many are not prepared to admit or accept. However, no Torah believing Jew can deny the strong argument presented in this book. Hawkins points out that the Torah promises peace and security for the Jewish people if they keep the 613 Laws. Destruction if they don't. He shows that through the process of adding various requirements to the Torah, the Jews have broken the covenant and has reaped the exact consequences stated in the Torah. He warns that unless the 613 Laws are faithfully kept, the Holocaust will be repeated. One can argue with Hawkins, but how can any decent Jew argue with the Torah?

Love Is a Choice (Minirth-Meier Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (October, 1989)
Authors: Robert, Dr. Hemfelt, Frank, Dr. Minirth, Frank B. Minirth, Don Hawkins, and Paul Meier
Average review score:

"Love is a Choice" is one of the best choices I've ever made
In a state of depression and desparation I felt an overwhelming urge to drive to [a bookstore] in search of help. I didn't even know what I was looking for. I did know my search would defintely begin in the "Self-help" section. I picked up several books on relationships and read the backs of them. The third one I picked up was "Love is a Choice", and when I read the back I started to cry. It was like divine intervention because I had only heard the term "codependent - I didn't know exactly what it meant and certainly didn't know that it applied to me. Boy, did it ever. This book was such an eye opener for me and truly has changed my life. I know I have a long way to go in the healing process (maybe a lifetime), but now I have hope and the power of knowledge on my side. The greatest (and most unexpected) benefit of reading this book was that it helped me to get to know God - someone I didn't think knew me or loved me. I am so thankful that this book was written, and that there are people with the knowledge, experience, and expertise out there willing to work hard to make a happy and healthy life a reality for so many of us. Thank you!

This book started the upswing!
After finally realizing that I was this thing called "codependent," I began to read all the well known titles so that I could be "codependent no more." They were helpful in that they oriented me to this new concept and defined it...gave me something to think about. Then one day five years ago I happened on "Love is a Choice." I read it voraciously! I put it inside other books as I sat through classes in nursing school. I underlined, I highlighted, I read passages over and over that set fire alarms off in my head! I came to Amazon to see if I could still buy it because I have physically worn mine out. This book was life changing, and gave me a foundation to make profound progress in my recovery. Now I go back and read my journal from years ago and can't believe I was ever that person.

a life changing book
I consider this book one of the best books I have ever read. It really helped me see how I was hurting myself by being caught up in the patterns of my family. It really helped me understand what a relationship wtih Christ was about. I also recommend "Boundaries" I have given a number of copies of this book away.
